How to Fix ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR in Google Chrome

SPDY is a networking protocol developed by Google. You may have experienced a networking error that is ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR. Spdy ensures fast web page download so that you experience a blazing fast speed when you surf the net.

This ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR mainly occurs in https enabled websites. In this article, I will tell you ways by which you can quickly solve the problem. 

Spdy needs SSL/TLS communication security to work; therefore, this ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR is experienced when you visit a secure website. Some examples of secure websites with HTTPS pages are Gmail, Google, youtube, etc.   


As already mentioned, it helps in loading web pages faster and to improve web security. There are mainly two reasons for this ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR that is outdated chrome update and due to antivirus and firewall blocking.

Method 1: update the chrome

Sometimes the problem is resolved just by updating the chrome. 

Go to the settings option that is three dots in the top right corner of the page.

When you click on about chrome, it will automatically start updating the chrome if you are not using the latest version. If you are already up to date, then it will show that google chrome is up to date.

Method 2: flush spdy sockets

If the above method does not help, then you can try flushing spdy sockets in google chrome. To execute this method, follow the following steps:

  1. Type chrome://net-internals/#events&q=type:SPDY_SESSION%20is:active in the address bar of chrome
  2. Then press enter
  3. Click on the drop-down arrow that you will see upper right corner of the browser window.
  4. Then click on flush sockets.
  5. Now close the chrome and wait for few minutes.
  6. Now you can check if the error persists.

Method 3: clear cache and files

You can try to solve the problem by clearing temporary files, cookies, and cache. For this follow the steps given below:

  1. Open the Run dialogue box by pressing windows key and R 
  2. In the run dialogue box window type %, temp% and press enter.
  3. A window will appear in many files and folders. Select all the files and folders and press shift and delete. 
  4. This process will help you clear all the temporary files and folders for clearing the cookies and cache, open google chrome.
  5. In the menu present at the top right corner of the window go to history.
  6. Navigate to precise browsing data, from the various options that come on screen select “Cookies and other sites and plugin data” and “cached image and files.” 
  7. Then finally click on the Clear browsing data button and with this, your problem will be resolved.

Method 4: use of chrome cleanup tool

These types of browser issues can be easily solved by using a chrome cleanup tool. Google also develops this tool for a better browsing experience. It removes all the third party home page toolbar and the unexpected crashes.

From the official website download and install the chrome cleanup tool if you don’t have it already. 

After completing the installation process, run a browser scan.

This process will take some time, but it will detect and fix all the issues and problems related to the network.

Method 5: check the antivirus

As already mentioned that one of the leading causes of this error is your antivirus or the firewall blocking. So, if none of those mentioned above methods helped then you can try by checking /changing the antivirus settings.

  1. If you have Avast, then there is a possibility that the error is caused by this only. You have to follow these steps to add the website in the web shield exclusion of Avast Software.
  2. Click on the setting option > active protection and customize for web shield option.
  3. To the exclusion list, add the blocking websites, clear the caches and then try to open the websites in the chrome.
  4. Or you can disable HTTPS if you are getting the error with most of the sites with http enabled.

You can also flush the DNS by using the command prompt. 

  1. Command Prompt is the input field in a text-based user interface screen, a command-line interpreter application available in most Windows operating systems. The official name of the command prompt is the Windows command processor. 
  2. Open the command prompt by typing the command prompt in the Cortana. Right-click on command prompt result and then select run as administrator. 
  3. In the command prompt window type the following commands:

ipconfig /release and 

ipconfig /all 

ipconfig /flushdns 

ipconfig /renew

netsh int ip set dns

netsh Winsock reset

  1. Press enter after every command to execute the command. 
  2. Allow the process to complete and after the completion of the process, restart your computer.
